God exists and the form of God is light. But He cannot be seen because you are looking on the outside. It is only when you look within that you will see Him. How can you sit outside and see the candle burning in the room? You will have to go into the room to see the candle. And what is the way to go in? Every day, regularly, sit in an asana and do japa of your guru mantra. If your mind is restless, then go for satsang with saints and sages, and read spiritual literature, such as the Ramayana, Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, Guru Granth Sahib.
The first and only purpose of human birth is experience of God. The human body that you have received is not intended for merely procreating, looking after the house or earning money. Even a dog, a cow and a horse procreate and look after their young ones. The whole of creation does this. Then what is the difference between them and us? There is only one difference: a human being thinks about the God that resides within.
So if you have received a human birth, your first task is to engage your mind in God. You may be involved in your household affairs, and that is all right, that needs to be done. If you have to live in the world, you have to do all that. But the real question is, who are you? Are you Savitri, Kalavati, Nirmala, Draupadi? These are names that you have received for the sake of an identity. They are not your real names. Your real name is atman, spirit or soul. Just as you live in a house made of bricks and cement, the soul resides in this body made of five elements and nine gates. However, everyone looks only at the house and not at the resident of the house.
Everyone should have an intense desire to see that spirit whose form is light. A householder can see that light and so can a sannyasin. Anyone can receive that experience irrespective of who you are and what you do. It does not matter whether you are rich or poor, man or woman, or belong to the upper class or the lower class. It does not matter whether you eat meat, drink alcohol, observe celibacy, get married or have children. If you drink too much alcohol, your body will get affected; if you eat too much, you will become weak; if you don’t eat at all, then also you will become weak. All these things are related to the body; they have nothing to do with God. If you want to find God, none of these obstacles can stop you from reaching Him. To find God you should have as strong a desire for God as you do for acquisition of material things. Anyone who has an intense desire for that Supreme Spirit will find Him.
